4/19/2023 0 Comments F1 2017 changesSo braking distances will inevitably be reduced - which automatically makes overtaking harder. The wider cars and tyres mean the cars will produce more drag, so be slower in a straight line, and cornering speeds will be higher. The FIA's target was to make overtaking no more difficult than it already was, and the combination of increases to aerodynamic and mechanical grip was calculated on that basis.īut the fear in some quarters is that the new cars could reduce overtaking. Cornering forces will be going up - perhaps by as much as 1G in fast corners. Engineers talk about 130mph corners becoming 150mph some bends that were not flat-out on the throttle will be. The effect of this will be vastly increased cornering speeds, especially in high-speed bends. The average gain was 15% the most was 31%.Īnd senior insiders say downforce gains could reach 40% by the end of the year. In October, governing body the FIA compiled information about the downforce gains made by all the teams. Tyres are bigger - up from 245mm wide to 305mm at the front and from 325mm to 405mm at the rear. The front wing has been widened and will now be a delta-shape, while the rear wing has been made lower and wider. The area under the car with which teams can produce downforce has been significantly increased. The bodywork has been widened from 1,400mm to 1,600mm - wider than ever before. The total width of the cars - the 'track' - has been increased from 1,800mm to 2,000mm, returning them to pre-1998 dimensions. The plan with the new rules is to make cars up to five seconds a lap faster and test the drivers physically more than they have been since Pirelli tyres entered F1 in 2011. The idea is to inject a bit of edge and rawness that some feel F1 has lost in the past few years - and hopefully end three years of Mercedes domination. In theory, drivers will be tested physically in a way they have not been for nearly a decade. We have the fixtures in from for the year with the UK race at Silverstone being on the 16th July, it is worth noting down in your diary.Teams are faced with a radically revamped set of rules that will lead to faster, more dramatic-looking machinery.Ĭars will be wider, with big, fat tyres, and reshaped front and rear wings. I know that I will be cheering him on to success this year. 2017 F1 – All Changeĭriver-wise things are changing up a little this year too with the biggest new being Nico Rosberg retiring, chances of Lewis Hamilton winning the 2017 Drivers Championship have increased. So don’t worry too much about it for now. Every year we are shocked how different the new cars look and then we get used to them a couple of months later. Behind the front wheels is where you will see the use of bargeboards forcing the moving air around the car. You can clearly see the height of the spoilers have been decreased and the nose at the front of the car has been stretched out. Take a look the pictures below that compares the 2016 (bottom) and 2017 (top) cars. 2017 F1 – All ChangeĬhanges for the year will include new regulations, wider tyres, wider cars, longer and pointier noses, bargeboards, lower rear wings, different rear diffuser and wet starts with the safety car. As ever, the changes to the rules have been done to speed up the cars, make the racing more exciting and hopefully resolve the overtaking issues. The season is due to kick off in Melbourne, Australia on 26th March. So it’s only a couple of months since the 2017 F1 season begins again and personally I’m starting to get the itch for the sport again.
